KAWA IJEN

The Ijen volcano complex in Java houses the largest acidic crater lake in the world. The Gunung Merapi (mountain of fire) stratovolcano is the highest point of the complex. The volcano is mined for its sulphur, which workers carry in baskets weighing up to 90 kilograms 300 metres up to the crater and then 3 kilometres down to Paltuding Valley for payment. Workers earn roughly $5:50 - $8.30 per day.
